Since leaving Linklaters I have been working on a freelance basis, collaborating with both translation agencies and end clients, mainly based in Spain. I worked at this “Magic Circle” law firm for many years as senior in-house translator. Having entered as a junior translator, I received in-house translation training to enable me to produce the highest quality legal and financial translations and within a few years I was promoted to senior translator, overseeing the whole department. The firm was divided into the following legal departments and I provided translations for all of them (a brief description of the sort of documents translated is given):

    • Corporate - all kinds of documents relating to M&A work, due diligence, restructurings, joint ventures and private equity transactions, including prospectuses, powers of attorney, public deeds, agency and distribution agreements, shareholder agreements, company by-laws/articles of association, individual and consolidated annual financial statements, corporate governance reports, and minutes of the meetings of boards of directors and shareholders meetings. 
    • Project Finance and Infrastructures - documents relating to public tenders for major civil engineering projects and their project finance, contracts and bidding documents (Administrative Terms & Conditions and Technical Specifications) for public tenders including projects such as the construction and operation of toll roads and motorways, maritime ports, gas and oil pipelines, waste water treatment and desalination plants, renewable energy projects (wind, solar, hydro) and mining. Also, documents relating to the securitisation of the Spanish electricity tariff deficit and the re-allocation and refarming of the Spanish radio spectrum.
    • Litigation - documents relating to all kinds of commercial disputes and insolvency matters, including documents filed with the court by the plaintiff/claimant (claims, complaints, pleadings, counterclaims, etc.) and resolutions issued by the courts on such disputes (court orders, decisions, judgments, etc.). 
    • Capital Markets - documents relating to regulatory issues of the securities markets, "relevant fact" communications to the CNMV, Circulars published by the CNMV, as well as the full translation of prospectuses of initial public offerings and rights issues to be submitted to the CNMV.
    • Finance and Banking - documents relating to restructurings and insolvency matters, as well as the translation of banking contracts, interbank loan agreements and Circulars published by the Bank of Spain.
    • Intellectual Property and Data Protection - documents containing legal advice in relation to cross-border and domestic regulatory issues concerning data protection, patent filings, intellectual property and trademarks.
    • Competition/Anti-trust - documents containing legal advice in relation to competition/anti-trust matters for a number of cross-border and domestic mergers, as well as documents relating to anti-trust/cartel investigations and dawn raids.
    • Employment - documents containing legal advice in relation to cross-border and domestic employment matters, including collective redundancies, cross-border implications of changes to employment law, health and safety at work and negotiation of collective bargaining agreements.
    • Real Estate - lease and lease-back agreements, construction contracts, sale and purchase agreements, powers of attorney and public deeds of all descriptions.

I worked for this Communications and Investor Relations Agency as translator and financial media analyst. My work consisted in monitoring the financial press in relation to issues of interest to the company’s clients and providing translated summaries of the articles in English. I also carried out translations of press releases, emails, contracts and many other documents.
